Fire & Rescue Station, Birstall by Norman & Underwood

New headquarters building and fire station located in the Leicestershire village of Birstall. The fire station which opened in April this year has been announced as the new Leicestershire fire and rescue service's headquarters.

The project to build the fire station cost around £11m and has been completed on schedule. The fire station will be replacing that of Syston’s fire and rescue station which was closed down for good in April this year.

The station is already in full operation with services commencing on April 15th 2013 making sure that communities in which the fire station serves are provided with a fast response from the emergency services.

Norman & Underwood were employed by B&K Services Ltd to install the stainless steel façade cladding. We liaised with Pick Everard Architects to realise their conceptual design and used our specialist knowledge of façade cladding techniques to enable the random seam and shingle cladding. Close communication was required with all parties to sequence the works and manage interfaces with other trades.

Scope of work

Fabrication, supply and fix of 320m2 Rimex granex m1a colourtex green stainless steel shingles to the fins on each building and 350m2 of Rimex granex m1a colourtex green stainless steel random flat lock horizontal panels with Rimex granex m1a coloured black stainless steel between windows.

The architect for the project was Pick Everard and the contract duration was six months.

Norman & Underwood were also delighted to announce that they were awarded for their work on the building by the Leicestershire Joint Consultative Committee for the Building Industry in the LJCC MERIT AWARDS FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP 2013.
