Armitage Construction – Jodrell Bank

Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics is the astronomical research centre of the University of Manchester. The centre occupies three main locations: the world-famous Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, the Alan Turing and Sackville St Building in central Manchester.

Jodrell Bank is a world leader in radio astronomy-related research and technology development using MERLIN, the UK’s national radio astronomy facility.

The Lovell Telescope has stood over the Cheshire Plain for the past 50 years at Jodrell Bank and it is known internationally as a landmark in the world of astronomy. Built in 1957 it has been a symbol of the wish to understand the universe in which we live. Today it remains one of the biggest and most powerful radio telescopes in the world.

We are pleased to announce that we have been selected by the University of Manchester to complete construction works on the Lovell Telescope. The works will take place on both of the lifts within the Telescope, which will require the removal and replacement of both of the service lifts, associated cables and other equipment. It has been recommended that as well as replacement lifts, we install a new control system, machine unit, wiring and lighting, sling assemble, car switched and car/landing push buttons. As disruption to the use of the Telescope could have major implications to ongoing research projects, one lift must remain open at all times.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to work on this project.
