The structural work includes preservation of the existing cast iron canopy structure and replacement of the roof glazing alongside repairs to stonework, lead work, gutters and platforms. All remaining areas will be restored to match the work carried out during the partial restoration of the station in the late 1980s. Services from the station will continue to operate as usual throughout the renovation. A new performance area on the platform hopes to increase the station's use as a cultural visitor attraction. Eddie Tribe, Regional Director of Mansell Construction Services, said: "This is a very prestigious scheme to be involved in, with particular challenges unique to this restoration project to contend with. We are working closely with English Heritage to ensure that their aspirations for the station are met, and are collaborating closely with them to restore the station to its former glory." Work has recently started on site and is due to finish in March 2012.
