...IS THERE A ‘HIDDEN KILLER’ IN YOUR ORGANISATION…?

On conducting an Asbestos investigation recently for a well known organisation we were astonished to still identify highly friable Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) which were still not being managed correctly in line with legal requirements. Thankfully many people are now aware of the risks associated with asbestos, however when we looked a little deeper we noticed very few organisations receive the right Asbestos Management advice to deal with the problem legally, or receiving substantially high costs from removal contractors to treat the problem.

ASBESTOS is indeed one of the world’s most dangerous, and indestructible natural minerals which has been used extensively throughout our human development for thousands of years.  ASBESTOS comes in many different forms with varying degrees of risks, when Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are disturbed microscopic invisible asbestos fibres are released into the air and if inhaled, can cause terminal diseases that affect your health over many years.
Example Case Study – Church Organ Blower Boxes
A study conducted in 2006 by the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) identified all 3 main types of Asbestos fibre (Brown; White & Blue) in the ACMs which lined a blower box supplying a church pipe organ. The HSL tests were conducted after the blower box had been removed and so results were not conclusive, however on examining the area where the blower box had been removed asbestos debris was positively identified on the floor where the box once stood, as well as inside the wind trunk of the organ. The potential exposure levels within the premises whilst the pipe organ was functional have not yet been established, however the risks need to be managed.

The Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) identified within the Blower Box was so friable and hazardous that the HSL couldn’t conduct many tests, due to the high risks of asbestos fibre release and asbestos exposure.
