TWO Exeter clergy will make their catwalking debuts at next week's Christian Resources Exhibition (Westpoint, Exeter, 25-26 Jan).

Rev Georgina Vye, curate in the Exeter St Thomas and Emmanuel Team Ministry, spent 27 years in the National Health Service before being ordained. She was a chaplain at both Exeter and Channings Wood prisons before taking up her present post.

'I love to create things with my hands,' said Georgina, 54. 'My colleague Anne and I created our own chasuble for Advent and have begun another for Lent. We are also looking at weaving small rugs for pew runners too as our church is very cold in winter.

'I will be at CRE for the first time after hearing positive comments from friends and colleagues. I hope to discover new ideas for liturgy - and get to handle some quality textiles!'

Joining her will be Rev Peter Ashman, assistant curate at Exeter St. James, near the university.

'It is a modern catholic parish with bells and incense on Sundays,' said Peter. 'So we wear vestments: alb and stole and chasuble for communion, cassock and cotta for non-eucharistic services. I have been known to wear a biretta and a Canterbury cap but very rarely.'

A wide variety of formal and informal ecclesiastical clothing will be displayed on the catwalk (1PM, WED 25 JAN) by leading designers like Juliet Hemingray who believes women clergy have brought a fresh look to clerical clothing.

'They won't put up with worn-out robes or three shades of grey,' said Juliet of Church Textiles in Derby. 'This has rubbed off on male clergy.' Other featured designers include Cross Designs and J Wippell of Exeter.

Open to the general public, CRE is often dubbed the 'ideal church show' and will feature more than 150 charities, missions and church suppliers displaying everything from heating systems to evangelistic puppets, lighting to pilgrimages, coffins to computers.
